Biography
In the summer of 2009, Scott Fleeman, a jazz saxophone player, met Emma Johnson, a hardcore “Warped Tour-esque” guitarist and former member of the in your face, all girl rock band, After the Reign, in a short lived indie experimental five piece named Moloko. Once the quintet disbanded Scott and Emma went on to become the founding members of The Stop Motion Cinema. Scott then reached out to long time best friend Patrick O’Rourke who alternated between bass and guitar before becoming the permanent bass player. In search of a drummer Emma invited Monique Merritt, a friend from middle school who had no previous musical experience, to learn drums while in a band setting. Monique showed amazing amounts of ambition and motivation and became a talented drummer as well as a highly devoted band mate.
This LA based band’s melodic songs are infused with soothing vocals and fresh beats that create a unique meditative sound. The Stop Motion Cinema draws influence from a wide spectrum of genres including psychedelic MGMT, indie/folk-alt artists such as The Decemberists, jazz artists like Cannonball Adderley and Miles Davis, and the bands’ primary influence, indie all stars, Death Cab for Cutie. The band is influenced by breaking musical stereotypes and tearing away from the “guitar, bass, drums, vocals” four piece by incorporating unconventional instruments in catchy songs you can bob your head to.
